Overview
Nyerere National Park, formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, is Tanzania’s largest protected area, covering approximately 30,000 square kilometers. Located in southern Tanzania, it offers an expansive wilderness of rivers, woodlands, wetlands, and savannahs. Location & Landscape
Nyerere National Park stretches across the Rufiji River basin and includes extensive floodplains, miombo woodlands, riverine forests, and lakes. Its diverse ecosystems support a wide range of species and make it one of Tanzania’s richest wildlife areas. The Rufiji River, Tanzania’s largest, runs through the park, providing vital water sources for animals and supporting vibrant aquatic life.
Wildlife Highlights
The park hosts large populations of elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards, African wild dogs, hippos, and crocodiles. It is renowned for its impressive sightings of large herds of buffalo and elephants, as well as predators that thrive in the diverse habitats. Nyerere is also famous for its birdlife, with over 440 bird species recorded, including African finfoot, Pel’s fishing owl, and the rare shoebill stork.
Itinerary
Arrive in the morning by charter flight from Dar es Salaam to Mtemere airstrip. You will be greeted by your Saruni Crest guide and transferred to your lodge or tented camp. After settling in and enjoying lunch, embark on an afternoon game drive along the Rufiji River and open plains. Expect to spot elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, and hippos as the day cools. Return to camp for dinner and your first night under the stars.
Wake early for a full day dedicated to game drives across the park’s diverse ecosystems—miombo woodlands, floodplains, and riverine areas. Search for predators such as lions, leopards, and wild dogs, as well as large herds of buffalo and elephant. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush and continue afternoon drives until sunset. Return to camp for dinner and your second night.
Begin with a morning game drive, focusing on spotting elusive species and birdlife in quieter parts of the park. Return to camp for lunch and some relaxation. In the afternoon, embark on a scenic boat safari on the Rufiji River, gliding past hippos, crocodiles, and a stunning array of birds. Enjoy sundowner drinks on the riverbank before returning to camp for dinner and your third night.
Start the day with a guided walking safari in the early morning, exploring the smaller details of the bush—tracking animal footprints, learning about local flora, and observing smaller wildlife. After breakfast, participate in a cultural visit to a nearby local village to learn about traditional life and customs. Return to camp for lunch and an optional afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Wake early for a final morning game drive, taking in the last moments of wildlife viewing. Return to camp for breakfast and check out. Transfer to Mtemere airstrip for your charter flight back to Dar es Salaam, concluding your 5-day wilderness adventure.
